Frequently Asked Questions

What are we buying and selling here?

You are buying and selling equity positions (fractional ownership) in publicly owned and traded Second Life corporations.

Why on earth would we want to do THAT?

Historically, the Second Life economy and its massive revenue have been dominated by a few elite individuals who are willing to personally take on the risk of tiering large land inventories, and are willing to deal with other large expenses. The Second Life Stock Exchange opens up this earnings potential to EVERY resident of Second Life who chooses to invest in publicly owned and traded companies. Even basic account holders who are personally unable to tier even a single square meter of land can now invest in and profit from the explosive economic marketplace which exists in Second Life!

How safe is this investment?

All investments carry with them some amount of risk, even in your Second Life. This particular one is unique to most other Second Life investments, however, as ALL STOCK in ALL COMPANIES (excluding voting shares in some circumstances) being traded on this stock exchange is REQUIRED to carry full liquidation value against the company's assets. What this means to you as an investor is that even in the event of a publicly owned and traded company failing, all shares can still be redeemed for their equivalent liquidation value in cash or other assets. While a bankruptcy situation certainly wouldn't be pretty, it wouldn't be a total wipe-out for investors either.

Sounds Great, How do I get Started?

Check out the How to Trade page for a primer on how the market works.

Will you ever list other companies on this exchange?

Yes. In fact, we are already in the beginning stages of the IPO process with two companies. We are also speaking in an informational capacity with several other companies who have not yet made an informal commitment to listing on this exchange. We will be publishing both listing fees and listing standards for general public viewing soon. Please watch the information section of the menu for more details.

Will you ever list companies who's primary business is something other than land trading?

Yes. This is now a certainty.

I just logged into the website for the first time and I have some money! That's great! But, why?

If you were already a previous Second Life Solutions member who is using or was rated by someone using our Cheap Ratings service, you'll probably have some funds on account already. All funds linked to your SL Solutions account can be used for any SL Solutions offering, including the stock exchange.

I posted a new market order, and funds or shares were deducted from my holdings. Why?

Any holdings that are required to execute the trade when another investor fills your order are escrowed (removed from your holdings and held in trust) at the time that you post the order. You can see any open orders you've placed on the market highlighted in yellow, with a "cancel" link next to them. If you elect to cancel an open market order before it is filled, the funds or shares which were escrowed will be returned to your holdings immediately.

Is it possible to use fractional linden dollars when trading?

No, we round everything on the trading floor to whole linden dollars because we want to ensure that every linden dollar in a player's account is always 100% available. We do use fractional linden dollars in back-end operations however. As one example, any fractional linden dollar that can't be given to an investor when dividends are posted is simply returned to the dividend pool to be posted on the following week.
